Next to the vicinity of the campsite you will find La Dehesa beach, a fluvial enclave on the banks of Tormes river. It is a garden area with trees and grass, umbrellas, picnic areas, public barbecues (sometimes they are closed) and a bar.
Alba de Tormes is a friendly town of around 5,000 inhabitants, located in the province of Salamanca. It stands out for its historical monuments and the conservation of its beautiful urban core.
In Alba de Tormes is the Carmelite Mothers of the Annunciation’s Convent, where Santa Teresa de Jesús’ tomb is located (A well-known mystic and poetic figure in literature). Furthermore, it counts with important monuments such as t Santa Teresa ‘s Basilica and Dukes of Alba’s Castle. Alba de Tormes is included in the route through the charming towns of Salamanca, being the starting point.
The city of Salamanca is located about 20 km from the campsite. Salamanca is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain. Its history dates back to Celtic times and is known for its architecture and the University of Salamanca, the oldest in the country.
Without a doubt, it is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Did you know that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Santa Teresa’s reservoir, about 30 km away, is one of the largest reservoirs in the River Duero basin. Furthermore, allowing the irrigation of numerous hectares, it is an ideal place to cool off and enjoy during the summer months.
The natural space that surrounds it stands out for its ecological value and its landscape. In the surrounding areas of the reservoir you can take a route along its banks, on foot or by bicycle. In its waters, the practice of many sports is allowed.
A varied and rich natural spectacle is what surrounds us, crossed by innumerable paths that we can go through. You can admire different landscapes: from the holm oak meadow with which we started in Alba de Tormes to the riverside forest. In the vicinity of Alba de Tormes, we can delight our senses with willows, alders, ash trees, poplars and a great diversity of birds. We can finish with the closest cereal steppe to the area of Arapiles and Carbajosa de la Sagrada.
Thanks to the great variety of landscapes and the good conservation of the area, many of these routes run along Vías Verdes, and some are adjacent to the Natura 2000 Network.
Whether you are an expert hiker or not, you will be able to find a route that suits your needs: From the Ruta de la Plata, 21 km long; to the Camino de las Aceñas, a 4 km circular route. A wide range of paths awaits you!
More than 1,500 km distributed among the more than 50 cycle paths enabled in the province await you in the province of Salamanca.
With a very changing landscape, there are routes for all tastes and physical conditions: enjoy a family bike ride, or your favorite extreme sport touring, the holm oak meadows, or the spectacular canyons of Las Arribes del Duero.
In 2016, the Council of Salamanca organized the I Provincial BTT Circuit, which this year celebrates its 7th anniversary with 22 tests distributed throughout the province from February to October.
The month of October hosts the Saint Patroness Festivities of Alba de Tormes in which the entire city dresses up to honor its Saint Patroness, Santa Teresa de Jesús, in festivities that date back to the year 1614 when Santa Teresa was beatified.
A big week full of events and festivities for all tastes: religious acts, parades, festivals, bullfighting, and of course an extensive program of cultural events for all ages are just a small example of everything that awaits you in Alba de Tormes in parties.
But not only October adorns the streets of Alba de Tormes. As a cosmopolitan city and open to its inhabitants and visitors, throughout the year you can enjoy various festivals: Las Águedas in February, Carnival, Easter, the San Antonio agricultural, livestock and food fair in June, Santa Teresa’s Transverberation festivities in August, and Virgen de Otero’s festivities in September.
The star dishes of the gastronomy of the area are the “chanfaina“, made with rice and lamb offal, and the “hornazo“, made with wheat flour, loin and jam from the area.
Other typical dishes are garlic soup with torreznos and ham cubes, white beans with chorizo and stewed or pickled partridges. As for meats, we highlight the roasted lamb, tostón or suckling pig and the veal from the land that is prepared roasted.
The fish are prepared well fried in abundant oil. In desserts, we highlight the custard, flans and rice pudding, made in an artisanal way.
It is impossible to talk about Alba de Tormes without mentioning Saint Teresa of Jesus since it is in this town where Saint Teresa passed away. Thus, it is here in the Monastery of the Annunciation of Our Lady, of the Discalced Carmelites, where her incorrupt body is preserved and two of his most outstanding relics: his left arm and his heart.
This is the reason why Alba de Tormes has become a pilgrimage hub for those disciples of Santa Teresa who want to know more about her life and honor her legacy.
One of the most outstanding paths of the pilgrimage could be the one called “From the cradle to the Sepulcher” that runs for 115 km along all the places that marked an important milestone in the life of the Saint. This path unites her place of birth , Ávila, with the one of her death, Alba de Tormes. But it is not the only one, many other paths that start from very different points of the Iberian Peninsula pay homage to Santa Teresa, especially on important dates in her life, making us going through a historical and spiritual journey.
The Tormes River, in its middle section, hosts what we can call “Paradise” for those who love trout fishing, since it is in this area where we can find the largest specimens of native trout in all of the peninsula.
There are several trout preserves in the area: El Chorrón, Tormes, Galisancho, or the recently recovered Alba de Tormes. In all of them you will be able to enjoy your passion because due to the existing ecosystem and the biodiversity that inhabits it, the area guarantees the ideal conditions for breeding brown trout.
Not only the common trout or the fario trout identifies us, but also the springs bring us to Alba de Tormes the perfect and at the same time fleeting time for rainbow trout fishing. Thanks to the proximity of the fish farm, for some unknown reason, the Spring fills the river as it passes through Alba with these very special and aggressive trout.
